The goal of the proposed project is to investigate technology that enables the creation of systems that can radically, yet smoothly replace traditional file systems with semantic repositories. In order to reach this goal, we must address the following research questions:

  • How to enrich communication protocols with semantics?
  • How to detect semantic events from file system interactions?
  • How to provide a user-friendly approach to semantic systems?

These three questions correspond to the three main workpackages in the project. In the first and most significant workpackage, we will focus on enhancing a particular technology, the WebDAV (Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning) standard, in order to support semantic metadata and queries. We also plan to implement prototype semantic storage system that can then store the information transmitted over the SemDAV protocol.

In the second SemDAV workpackage, we will research how to provide as much semantic information as possible from system events and user interactions. Once these characteristic system events have been identified, we must also develop an event ontology, which defines the schema for persistent semantic events. Semantic event information, as well as user annotations, can then be transmitted over the SemDAV protocol developed in first workpackage.

The third goal of the project is to research new approaches in user interfaces which break from the traditional fire-tree paradigm, and provide a more intuitive or "brain-like" approach to media management. The proposed interface, which we envision as a kind of semantic desktop, should also provide a mechanism for manual semantic annotation, based on a user-defined and domain specific ontologies.
The result of the three research workpackages should be a prototype implementation that validates the newly developed SemDAV protocol, illustrates the generation of semantic event metadata, provides a proof-of-concept for the semantic storage and event ontologies, and demonstrates a new paradigm for digital objects storage, organization, and retrieval.

The SemDAV project is carried out by University of Vienna (Multimedia Information Systems Group), Research Studios Austria (Studio Digital Memory Engineering) and P.Solutions.
